Texas Football: 5 defensive players to watch in spring game
Which defensive players out of the Texas football program should we be keeping an eye on for the Orange-White game taking place on April 13?
Texas football has been hard at work this off-season as they have already completed three weeks of their practice schedule and they now face the final week of practices before their Orange-White Spring Game on Saturday. The ‘glorified scrimmage’ is an opportunity for Longhorn players to show-out in front of the coaching staff, former players, prospect recruits and fans under the bright lights of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
For head Texas football coach Tom Herman and his staff the spring game is an important piece of a critical evaluation period during the off-season as they begin to put together the two-deep depth chart for the upcoming season. Putting in the hard work during spring practices, as well as transferring their play from the practice field to the spring game, will earn some players significant playing time during the 2019 season.
Texas returns three of 11 starters on the defensive side of the ball for 2019, and all three starters come from the secondary. Safeties Brandon Jones, Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster return to their respective roles they played in last season. While not as many starters return on defense as they do on offense, there are multiple players returning that played meaningful minutes last season and will step into starting roles, including defensive ends Malcolm Roach and Ta’Quon Graham, and linebacker Jeffery McCulloch. Outside of those players Texas will have to fill the remaining positions in the front seven, as well as both cornerback spots.
This slideshow will take a look at five players on defense that we should keep our eye on as they have the potential to make an impact on Saturday, April 13 for the Orange-White spring game and during the 2019 season for the Texas Longhorns football program.
