Texas Football: 5 defensive players to watch in spring game
#99 Keondre Coburn – Defensive Tackle
Redshirt Freshman (6-2, 340)
The nose tackle position is a key piece to Orlando’s defense and he has had some impressive players in Poona Ford and Chris Nelson fill that position these past two seasons. Orlando is now looking for his next starting nose tackle, and sophomore Keondre Coburn is in a heated spring battle with senior Gerald Wilbon for the job.
Coburn maintained his redshirt after only appearing in three games last season, garnering two total tackles, including one during the Sugar Bowl while playing limited snaps. Coburn’s massive size is perfect for the position and is comparable to Wilbon’s (6-3, 335), but what Coburn brings to the table that Wilbon doesn’t is an interior pass rush.
Both Coburn and Wilbon are solid versus the run, but it will be interesting to see which player applies more pressure up the middle during the spring game. While Wilbon has more experience with in game action, Coburn has the talent level to become a NFL caliber prospect.
Be sure to keep on the lookout for Coburn this Saturday as he has the potential to win the starting job this season and for the foreseeable future.
