Texas Basketball Recruiting: Visiting ’19 G Brendan Wenzel final class piece?
How crucial would it be for the 2019 Texas basketball signing class to get one last commit before this entire cycle is wrapped up.
It is the 2019 Texas basketball recruiting class that is building the hype for the future of the program. Under head Texas basketball coach Shaka Smart, this program needs a shift in direction. Texas basketball already has a solid class in store at the moment just ahead of the last signing period for this cycle and National Signing Day 2019.
Given that Smart is possibly able to add one more commit/signee to a nationally top 20 ranked recruiting class, this could wind up being the best in the Big 12 for this cycle. That final piece to the puzzle for the 2019 Texas basketball recruiting class could wind up being an under-the-radar in-state guard Brendan Wenzel.
Last week, Wenzel became the first 2019 high school prospect within the past few months to take a visit to the Forty Acres. His visit with the Texas basketball program came on April 11. This O’Connor High School guard could also take the geographic relevance of Texas into consideration for his final commitment decision.
If the Longhorns are able to add one more guard to this 2019 signing class, the 2019-20 season could be very fortunate. Texas does need to add depth in the backcourt for the next few years. The only commit/signee for the Horns at the moment that is even capable of effectively playing guard is four-star Missouri City, TX, wing Donovan Williams.
The other two signees in this 2019 class beyond Williams are both bigs. Smart could use another guard that is capable of sparking the second team offense and spacing the floor. Outside shooting is one of the strengths of Wenzel.
This un-ranked (at least through 247Sports and Rivals) didn’t get much interest from power conference programs until very recently. According to a report from 247Sports, Wenzel was “hearing from” the Kansas State Wildcats entering the month of April. Texas and Kansas State could be two potential landing spots for Wenzel for fans to watch out for.
However, there isn’t any indication that he ever took a visit, official or unofficial, to Manhattan lately. That could give Smart and the Longhorns the edge if he decides to put his pledge and signed National Letter of Intent with a Big 12 program.
Wenzel was also originally a signee for the UTEP Miners in that 2019 recruiting class. He signed his letter of intent with UTEP during the Early Signing Period for college hoops last fall. On March 21 via his Twitter timeline, Wenzel opened his recruitment back up.
He also recently received an offer from the Utah Utes. Wenzel’s recruitment is picking up a lot of momentum as he’s one of the better uncommitted guards left for the 2019 recruiting cycle before National Signing Day.
We’ll see where the Texas Longhorns basketball program remains at for his recruitment in the next week or so. The decision has to be coming soon for Wenzel, and getting a late visit to the Forty Acres could help out Smart and the Longhorns when he announces officially.
