2019 NFL Draft: 6 thoughts following Longhorns letdown
Dissecting the 2019 NFL Draft class from the Texas Longhorns program doesn’t do much good for the morale of the fan base.
It came and it went without a bang for the Texas Longhorns football program. The 2019 NFL Draft was once again a hapless set of three days for Texas football coming off a strong finish to the 2018 campaign. This wasn’t the worse result we’ve seen in general for the Longhorns in the NFL Draft. The 2014 NFL Draft was much better all-around since Texas football didn’t have a single player selected that year for the first time since 1937.
However, the 2019 NFL Draft was still a pretty big letdown by any consideration or standard for the Longhorns. The first player among all the former Longhorns in this draft class didn’t even hear his name called until late in the fifth round. The fact that it was day three until Texas saw a former player selected is a microcosm of the previous drop-off in play on the field the past eight years.
A decline in the national prominence of the Longhorns football program can also cause the results in the NFL Draft to bottom out. But, head coach Tom Herman appears to have the Longhorns back on the right track from here on out. Hopefully Texas can continue this rise back up the standings in the Big 12 this fall.
For now, we are stuck dissecting what happened and what went wrong for Texas in an event like the 2019 NFL Draft with a long dead period in college football’s off-season looming.
Here’s a deeper look into the recap of the 2019 NFL Draft for former members of the Texas Longhorns football program and how things could shake out for these players at the next level.
