Honorable mentions

As we discussed before here, Texas football lost a lot in the quarterback and running back rooms to the transfer portal this year at the outset of the off-season. But not all of the players that put their names in the transfer portal initially wound up choosing to depart the Forty Acres.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Thompson was a good example of Herman and the Longhorns coaching staff putting together the effort to bring a potential transfer candidate back to campus. Thompson seemingly wanted to transfer out due to the clog on the quarterback depth chart.

Instead, Texas wound up losing two quarterbacks to the transfer portal not with the last name of Thompson. The most crucial quarterback loss in the long-term could be the former highly touted four-star pro-style quarterback 2018 signee Cameron Rising. After putting his name in the transfer portal, Rising went from Texas to the Utah Utes to join head coach Kyle Whittingham.

The key losses to the running back room included redshirt sophomore Toneil Carter and redshirt junior Tristian Houston.

We should also mention here that the qualifications for this list are that the players had to be originally intending to wind up back on the roster for this coming season. Players that were set to either run out of eligibility or run into suspension/academic ineligibility/etc. anyway don’t count here.
