While Humphrey had more experience and proven numbers that he would bring back to the Texas football receiving corps in 2019, the former four-star linebacker 2019 signee De’Gabriel Floyd could be a bigger loss. The news was unexpected and severe for Floyd early in spring ball.

Fortunately for the Longhorns, there is at least a lot of young talent at linebacker. There are also a lot of sleepers and former three-star linebacker signees that will have a shot at rising to the occasion this fall. Texas also added a huge late commitment to the 2019 signing class in former Minnesota Golden Gophers pledge and the nation’s top JUCO inside linebacker with Juwan Mitchell.

Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando will have to put a lot of faith in seniors in the front seven like Malcolm Roach, Jeffrey McCulloch, and Gerald Wilbon. To make up for the absence of the talented Floyd, Texas will also need McCulloch, Mitchell, and sophomore Joseph Ossai to rise to the occasion at linebacker.

Texas was able to answer the questions quickly that emerged at linebacker in terms of depth and experience. Yet, the fact of the matter is that Floyd was one of the most talented and promising signees in the 2019 class for the Longhorns. If he’s never able to play for Texas due to his spinal stenosis, it would be a massive loss.
