Background of RJ Hampton

What led a huge target for the 2019 Texas basketball recruiting class that had a hometown fairly close to campus, in-state talented guard RJ Hampton, evade his domestic offers and take his game overseas?

There is a growing trend for top talent like Hampton to what to take a different route to get a potential edge in the path to the NBA. The Little Elm High School combo guard stands at 6-foot-5 and 185 pounds.

If the NBA does change its rule soon that makes potential draftees play one year of college ball before declaring for the draft, someone like Hampton could be a lottery pick this year. Yet, it could still be a good move for Hampton to size up a bit and refine his game before taking his talents to the NBA.

But the Little Elm High School combo guard stands at 6-foot-5 and 185 pounds. He held 17 offers and took numerous visits to those schools that gave him attention on the recruiting trail. Hampton also ranks as the nation’s No. 5 2019 high school prospect and the second best combo guard. The only combo guard that ranked ahead of him was Oak Hill standout and North Carolina Tar Heels signee Cole Anthony.
