Did he make the right decision

The ultimate question that a lot of college basketball and NBA fans alike have to be asking themselves is: did RJ Hampton make the right decision? Fans of the Texas basketball program are likely making Hampton’s decision to pass them up and take his talents overseas an afterthought once the college football season arrives.

However, Hampton did have solid options among his finalist schools. Former Orlando Magic star point guard and Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway has a lot going right for him on the recruiting trail right now. Memphis was a growing favorite to land Hampton as we moved closer to the end of the final signing period for the 2019 basketball recruiting cycle.

But the final set of 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions actually had Hampton as a favorite to land with head coach Bill Self and the Jayhawks. A handful of the 247Sports experts making the Hampton Crystal Ball picks were still listed as “undecided” before he announced his overseas decision. But the Duke Blue Devils and Texas Tech Red Raiders were also a few of the picks.

On April 30, Hampton announced his four finalist schools and that he was planning on reclassifying to the 2019 recruiting class. His four finalists included Memphis, Kansas, Texas Tech, and the Kentucky Wildcats. It’s fortunate for Texas basketball that he didn’t land at another Big 12 school like Kansas or Texas Tech. But you have to respect and at least partly agree with his decision to join the growing trend of players foregoing college basketball to go overseas and get at least a bit of NBA exposure.
