Texas Basketball: 5 best remaining 2019 transfer prospects
Texas basketball could get the best of both worlds out of the transfer portal with the former North Carolina Tar Heels four-star point guard signee Seventh Woods. He could help bolster the backcourt depth and move along the development of rising sophomore point guard Courtney Ramey.
Woods has a national title pedigree from two seasons ago, and he could bring that mindset to this Texas locker room to also bolster the moral. He also got to learn under players that wound up, or are set to land in, the NBA lately including Coby White and Joel Berry.
The problem for Woods with the Tar Heels, and likely why he left, was the fact that he could never beat out the other point guards on the roster to win a starting job. The good news for him with the Longhorns is that he doesn’t need to win the starting job. That’s not the role that Texas needs him to fill at the moment.
Meanwhile, UNC had a very deep rotation that mostly edged out any significant role that team needed to fill off the bench or in the starting five. Woods only has one career start, but put up impressive shooting numbers during his time in Chapel Hill, including 37 percent from beyond the arc. He didn’t get many offers from schools outside of the Carolinas coming out of high school.
