There’s nothing like a career journeyman at the college hoops level that Texas basketball could haul in without worry in regard to him leaving after the 2019-20 regular season. This is the category that the former USC and Duke point guard Derryck Thornton fits into since he’s been in college hoops for the better part of four years now.

It seems like Thornton was around forever in college basketball since he started his career way back in 2015 with head coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils. Thornton is a former five-star point guard signee for Duke as part of their 2015 signing class. Coming out of Findlay Prep in 2015, Thornton had plenty of hype.

Moreover, Thornton held 20 offers coming out of high school including from the Oklahoma Sooners, Michigan Wolverines, Washington Huskies, Kentucky, Duke, and Arizona. He ranked as the nation’s No. 14 2015 high school prospect and a top three rated point guard. Since then, he hasn’t truly been able to reach his ceiling.

The best individual season for Thornton came with Duke during his true freshman campaign. He did take a pretty big step back as a sophomore before he transferred to USC after the 2016-17 season. He averages 6.4 points per game, 2.8 assists, and 2.0 rebounds in his three seasons playing college ball.
