5. Quarterbacks

While it might be one of the thinner in terms of proven experience for Texas football, the quarterback position does have a ton of talent and depth between the three highly touted former four-star dual-threat signees. The three signal callers that the Longhorns have rostered right now also fit Herman’s offensive scheme quite well.

The mainstay here is the rising junior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger who pretty much has this starting job more locked up than any other signal caller in the Big 12. Ehlinger posted more than 40 total touchdowns last season and will come into the 2019 season with a large Heisman hype train rolling for him.

Behind Ehlinger sits a host of quarterbacks that could compete for the starting job once his time on the Forty Acres is up. But the real question in the quarterback room lies with what happens if Ehlinger gets injured. Quarterback lost a lot of depth for the Longhorns in the early part of the off-season, including the former backup Shane Buechele who landed with the SMU Mustangs.

It will be redshirt freshman Casey Thompson and incoming freshman early enrollee Roschon Johnson that compete for the backup job behind Ehlinger. Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck would likely give either a short leash if it came to the situation that one needed to take the spot of an injured Ehlinger.
