Texas Football: 5 strongest position groups entering 2019 season
4. Tight End
The problem with mentioning tight end among the best position groups that Texas football will have in store for the coming season is the little emphasis this offense puts on them. Tight end was big last season for the Longhorns behind the efforts in blocking and the passing game by senior Andrew Beck.
But it took five years of learning in this Longhorns scheme under two head coaches, Herman and Charlie Strong, to get to the point of setting a career high in receiving yards and touchdowns. With that in mind, there was only a small portion of the Ehlinger passing yards that went to Beck and the Texas tight ends last year.
This fall, the starter for Texas at tight end should be the redshirt sophomore former three-star signee Cade Brewer. Beck and Brewer have a good number of similarities between them. The main difference between the two is the fact that Brewer should be a slightly bigger threat in the receiving game but not as much of a refined blocker.
A big key for Texas at tight end this season will be who is backing up Brewer and who else gets reps at the position. If second-year receiver Malcolm Epps is used as a tight end, this group will be very potent. Even if not, the four-star Arizona native 2019 signee Brayden Liebrock could be the next man up here.
