Texas Football: 5 strongest position groups entering 2019 season
2. Safeties
Texas football thrived off the safety play that it got last season. What was so surprising about that fact was that the starting set of safeties was lined with new faces among the starters. The pair of standout former five-star safety recruits Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster are now entering their sophomore seasons in 2019.
There are two positions on either side of the ball that pose solid arguments to command the top spot among this position group ranking for the Longhorns. On the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns, it is the safety spot. Sterns will be leading this group this fall, but Foster could be moving positions from safety to nickelback.
While some Texas fans would still consider nickelback potentially part of the safeties in the defensive backfield, we won’t consider him to be here. Even with Foster excluded, the Longhorns have a boatload of talent at safety. Rising senior Brandon Jones will be the other mainstay for Texas in this position group.
Getting Jones back was expected for this Texas defense, but he will add a lot of valuable experience to this group. Behind Sterns and Jones lies experience with Josh Thompson and Chris Brown and talent in waiting with five-star 2019 signee Tyler Owens.
