The rumor firestorm that usually catches onto the coaching carousel in some form or fashion went beyond Texas football, with Urban Meyer discussed with USC.

A former assistant coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes is still keeping active on social media, and most notably Twitter. The Twitter timeline of former Ohio State assistant under former head coach Urban Meyer, Zach Smith, created an uproar lately due to a Tweet and discussion he had on his new podcast called ‘Menace 2 Society’. Beyond that buzz created by Smith, he’s still intertwining Texas football in his Twitter posts and podcast.

Smith was notable due to his feuds involving head Texas football coach Tom Herman last offseason. That Twitter storm that Smith got himself on involving a situation with Herman, himself, and Meyer, off-the-field even kept into the 2018 regular season. But there are Tweets, and even one podcast episode, that are still connecting with Herman.

However, the debate between Herman with the Texas Longhorns football program and Smith and their ties back at Ohio State didn’t catch as much of a media firestorm as this new Meyer-coaching situation. Meyer retired from his coaching tenure with the Ohio State football program after his Rose Bowl win over the Washington Huskies last season.

Most of this open speculation from Smith makes for entertaining conversation, but that seems to be about it. That seems to be especially true for the Meyer and Herman debates.

This is one of those headlines that looks to be continuously ongoing, and Smith just won’t drop his feud with Herman no matter what. That headline felt like it was done last fall, but this new podcast rehashed that entire discussion.

The nugget that Smith tried to give on a June 17 podcast of his was the connection between Meyer and the USC Trojans. If USC head coach Clay Helton continues to sit on a hotter and hotter seat throughout this coming season, that program could be looking for a new coaching candidate before too long.

In a recent interview with the Columbus Dispatch, Meyer did attempt to shut down the rumors linking him with the USC coaching job if it comes available. But that discussion was still put forward by the former Meyer assistant on a podcast since that Columbus Dispatch piece was released.

Texas, USC, and Ohio State continue to stay linked in the offseason headlines since Meyer has some level of rumors circulating for that coaching job. Texas and USC were also linked through the back-and-forth saga involving five-star wide receiver Bru McCoy transferring between each school at least once.

When Meyer originally left the Ohio State coaching job for what appeared to be his retirement, he cited it due to health reasons. Some of those health reasons were pretty visible with him in pain on sidelines during the 2018 season.

All in all, do I doubt that USC could have a high-profile coaching vacancy by season’s end? No.

Do I think that Meyer will occupy that coaching vacancy like Smith is ensuing on his new podcast? Probably not by current indications in the media.
