There is a certain path that Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger has to stay on to keep his name in the Heisman conversation this year.

This will be a fun ride for Texas football fans to see what rising junior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger can do in the next step of his career for this coming season. Ehlinger is garnering hype all over the college football landscape and in the national media spotlight as a legitimate Heisman contender.

Production and stat line proved last season that Ehlinger is ready to make that leap toward a true Heisman contender and potential All-American on a national scale. He was the first quarterback in the history of the Texas football program to amass 25 passing touchdowns and 15 rushing scores. He did all that while throwing for around 3,300 passing yards and only tossing five interceptions. Ehlinger was also one of the three team leaders in rushing yards last season.

However, the 2019 campaign is an opportunity for Ehlinger to take another step in his development as a passing quarterback. If he can do that, the rest of the college football landscape better watch out as he will make yet another stride to becoming the most valuable quarterback in the nation and a better NFL Draft prospect.

What Ehlinger would need to do to win the Heisman Trophy this fall is register at least 50 total touchdowns while increasing his total yards from scrimmage and maintaining at least the same passing efficiency he did as a sophomore. That is doable, but by no means easy.

Here’s a look at a comparison between Sam Ehlinger of the Texas Longhorns football program and the other top contenders for the Heisman Trophy in 2019 and where he could find an edge.
