Quarterback: Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

For most of the 2018 regular season, it appeared that Alabama’s superstar junior signal caller Tua Tagovailoa was the far and away front runner to win the Heisman honors. However, Murray and Ohio State Buckeyes former starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins caught up to him by the time conference championship week rolled around.

Alabama ultimately looked dominant until they ran into Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game last season. That’s where it all fell apart for Tua and the Crimson Tide. Nonetheless, Tagovailoa still registered nearly 4,000 passing yards and 48 total touchdowns during his sophomore season.

Where Sam Ehlinger holds an edge

While the Big 12 does have a more defined path to winning the conference championship game and making it to the College Football Playoff, the SEC West spotlight definitely helps out a quarterback like Tua when it comes down to it. Injury concerns and surprisingly missing out on the Playoff is where Ehlinger could hold an edge over Tua.
