Texas Football: Comparing Sam Ehlinger among top Heisman contenders

Quarterback: Trevor Lawrence, Clemson

Every year there is seemingly one golden boy at quarterback that has unlimited hype heading into the college football season. This offseason, most of that attention fell upon the Clemson Tigers rising sophomore quarterback and also a reigning National Championship with Trevor Lawrence.

This coming season, it will be about somehow meeting all this hype and expectation that so quickly fell on the shoulders of Lawrence. Clemson got insane production out of Lawrence, though, in a season where he wasn’t even the starter behind center the entire way. He completed more than 65 percent of his passes for 3,280 passing yards and more than 30 total touchdowns.

Where Sam Ehlinger holds an edge

Finding an edge for Ehlinger with this Texas football team is harder when you compare him alongside Lawrence and Tagovailoa. Those seem to be the defined two top Heisman contenders in 2019. If head coach Dabo Swinney gives a heavier workload to Clemson star running back Travis Etienne or Lawrence manages to somehow fall into a sophomore slump, Ehlinger could nab the edge.
