Center Starter: Zach Shackelford, Senior

The last two years saw rising senior center Zach Shackelford rotate with a number of different linemen at this position. Texas football looks to be more consistent and steady at center this coming season with a full offseason of rest and rejuvenation for Shackelford as he also rose to the occasion around the end of last season.

Few Texas offensive linemen come into the 2019 season with as much hype and expectation that seemingly generated out of nowhere than Shackelford. The national college football preview magazine for the 2019 season from Athlon Sports named him as a preseason Second-Team All-American at center.

Backup: Derek Kerstetter, Junior

Last season, it was the former Texas starting center/offensive guard Elijah Rodriguez that got looks at center when Shackelford was able to be on the field in game action. This year, it looks like that versatility role along the offensive line could fall to rising junior towering 6-foot-6 and 310 pound standout Derek Kerstetter.

While Kerstetter was mostly stout for Hand and Herman in his previous two years for the Longhorns, he never quite find a solidified home at one position. He traditionally fits as an offensive tackle, but he does have snaps at center in the past. He’s also quick and versatile enough to switch over in the blink of an eye if need be.
