Quarterback Starter: Sam Ehlinger, Junior

The aforementioned star junior signal caller Ehlinger is going to lead this Texas football offense potentially even to a Big 12 Championship and/or appearance in the College Football Playoff if he’s able to take another step forward. He was very close to getting the Longhorns there last season, falling one step shy against the Oklahoma Sooners in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Last year, Ehlinger was the first quarterback in Texas football history to amass 25 touchdown passes and 15 rushing touchdowns in the same season. He also put together more than 3,200 passing yards and a completion percentage roughly around 65 percent while only tossing five picks.

Backup: Casey Thompson, Redshirt Freshman

Although he hasn’t yet taken an official game snap during a college football regular season game or bowl game, redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Thompson is by far the second most experienced option behind Sam. That’s what you get when redshirt junior former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele transfers to join the SMU Mustangs.

Getting Thompson back on campus was a huge win for Herman this offseason. The former four-star dual-threat Oklahoma native recruit is going to be the next option up for Texas in all likelihood if Ehlinger goes down with injury. Since Ehlinger hasn’t made it through an entire football season without getting injured since his freshman year of high school, Thompson must be ready in the backup role.
