X-Wide Receiver Starter: Collin Johnson, Senior

The best situation for this Texas football offense in 2019 would be to have senior star wide receiver Collin Johnson as the leader in receptions and yards. The 6-foot-6 and 225 pound stud wideout is going to be a top passing game target in the Big 12 this season. He’s coming off a junior campaign where he racked up 985 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

The loss of former junior breakthrough Texas wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey will put more pressure on Johnson’s shoulders to be the guy in the receiving corps. Humphrey was an early entrant in the 2019 NFL Draft before falling undrafted to the New Orleans Saints.

Could this finally be the year where Johnson gets more than 1,000 receiving yards?

Backup: Malcolm Epps, Redshirt Freshman

There’s a whole group of sizable and athletic wide receivers that the Longhorns have that could all backup Johnson. But the player that keeps emerging in conversation to become the next standout X-wide receiver is redshirt freshman Malcolm Epps. Watch out for fellow second-year receiver Brennan Eagles to step up in this spot along with Epps.

The former four-star tight end recruit has the size, strength, and athleticism to become a big threat for the quarterbacks on the outside. Epps stands at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds and has good vertical ability. But he only had one reception during his true freshman campaign, so there will be a learning curve with him as a backup.
