H-Wide Receiver Starter: Joshua Moore/Jake Smith (Freshman)

Texas football could be giving anyone looks out of the slot at the h-wide receiver spot this fall. Moore could be the backup to Duvernay before he ultimately takes over the starting role. Or, he could start for Herman and Beck if they feel like the former highly touted four-star wide receiver recruit Jake Smith isn’t ready for this much of a spotlight.

Coming in as a true freshman, Smith still has to put on size working under strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight before he’s ready to go. But splitting up the time here between Moore and Smith, among other options, seems like the best way to go with a receiving corps that is so deep and talented.

Backup: Jordan Pouncey, Redshirt Sophomore

The time seems to be now for redshirt sophomore 6-foot-1 and 205 pound wide receiver Jordan Pouncey to finally step up and make his way up the depth chart. After the Orange-White Game last offseason and this year, Pouncey looked to be a potential breakthrough target among the unheralded Texas wide receivers.

However, Pouncey just finds himself in this spot since there’s no clear option among the backups. Texas has a lot of versatile wide receivers, especially among the last two signing classes. Losing out on the former five-star wide receiver transfer and commit Bru McCoy, who went back to the USC Trojans, hurt the depth chart here too.
