1. Changing coaching scene in the Big 12

For the existing coaches in the Big 12 that are long tenured and recognizable at Big 12 Media Days, there were new attitudes. Elsewhere, there were new faces all over the place among the head coaches for the 10 Big 12 programs. The West Virginia Mountaineers, Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, and Texas Tech Red Raiders all have new head coaches in 2019.

The most entertaining of the bunch at Big 12 Media Days were expected between Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy and Kansas head coach (formerly with Oklahoma State and the LSU Tigers) Les Miles. It seemed like it was difficult for even Miles to get the confidence up for his Kansas team this coming season, even trying to make sense of the Pooka Williams-situation.

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley addressed recruiting in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex with a new level of confidence for his program. Herman and Riley will continue to duke it out for the top prospects out of the Metroplex for the 2020 recruiting cycle and beyond.

New West Virginia head coach Neal Brown (formerly with the Troy Trojans) and former Utah State Aggies head coach Matt Wells (now with Texas Tech) brought positive attitudes and lots of confidence to Big 12 Media Days this week. Wells shared a similar perspective on a “championship caliber” administration like Herman did with the Longhorns.
