A true breakthrough candidate for the Texas football program for this coming season could be sophomore running back Keaontay Ingram.

It’s that point of the college football offseason where all the preseason honors for the Power Five Conferences drop and all the award watch lists are released. In the Big 12, the preseason honors were released ahead of the media days last week. A host of Texas football players were mentioned among those Big 12 preseason honors last week and were present on national award watch lists in the past five days.

Among those included on watch lists was rising sophomore Texas football running back Keaontay Ingram. He was announced to be on the Doak Walker Award watch list earlier this week. Since there were more than 70 names on the watch list for the nation’s best running back, including Ingram wasn’t that overwhelming for his slotting at the top.

You can view the full watch list for the 2019 Doak Walker Award from the 2019 college football preseason, thanks to NBC Sports College Football Talk here.

However, it wouldn’t take long for Ingram to gain the spotlight as a top 10 running back in the nation if he does have a solid sophomore season. Texas just gets too much attention across the country for Ingram to slip under-the-radar if he’s truly able to breakthrough.

The freshman campaign for Ingram was solid, but there is a lot of room to grow. Staying healthy throughout the 2019 regular season would also work very far in Ingram’s favor.

Here’s a look at a definite comparison between Texas Longhorns football running back Keaontay Ingram and the other top names at his position in the nation on the Doak Walker Award watch list for 2019.
