There is no particular order to this list. I am just going through the five running backs that could be the top challengers, in my opinion, for the Doak Walker Award in 2019 and how Ingram could compare. Picking out just five running backs from a watch list that includes more than 70 names is a tough feat.

The first running back up here is one that Texas football hopefully doesn’t get to face anytime soon. That is unless the Boston College Eagles make a big run unexpectedly in the ACC in the next two seasons. But the Boston College backfield is surely stout behind a legitimate Heisman contender in star junior running back AJ Dillon.

Recapturing the magic that Dillon posted during his true freshman campaign with Boston College is the key here. A combination of injury issues and defenses keying in on him more disallowed the continuation of the rise to superstardom for Dillon. He still totaled more than 1,000 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns last year.

Where Ingram could hold the edge:

Injury concerns limited both Dillon and Ingram to varying degrees. Dillon played in 10 games last season after getting to play in 13 in his freshman season. Ingram holding up better health-wise than Dillon is the main area for him to get the edge. The Longhorns are also in a bigger spotlight by a long shot than the Eagles.
