Texas Football: Comparing Keaontay Ingram among top Doak Walker RB’s
A player that last year’s Texas football team faced already could be both a Doak Walker Award finalist and a Heisman contender. Georgia Bulldogs rising junior running back D’Andre Swift was very limited against a very fast and vaunted Longhorns front seven in the Sugar Bowl to cap last season.
However, getting shut down for the most part in the Sugar Bowl should only motivate Swift to accomplish more than he ever has during his junior campaign. Last season, he still racked up around 1,350 total yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns.
Swift didn’t register the same level of production that Etienne did, but he had tougher competition on the opposite side of the ball in SEC play than Clemson had in ACC play. Swift also had more competition in the backfield with the Dawgs than Etienne had with Clemson. Averaging 6.4 yards per carry on 163 touches is nothing to scoff at in the case of Swift.
Where Ingram could hold the edge:
This is a pretty simple fact that Ingram could have a breakthrough sophomore campaign and one-up the numbers that Swift registers. If head coach Kirby Smart is still intent on managing the workload of Swift to keep him healthy the entire way, foreseeing more rushing yards and touchdowns for Ingram isn’t all that hard.
