Any player on this list that had to consider a position switch at one point for Texas football didn’t do their job that well with this team. That fits the bill for the former five-star safety recruit for the Longhorns who hails from Houston, TX, Drew Kelson. As a signee for the Longhorns in the 2004 recruiting class, Kelson never made much out of his collegiate career.

During the 2004 recruiting cycle, Kelson ranked as the No. 1 safety in the nation and a top 35 high school prospect overall. He surely never lived up to the hype as he ultimately finished out his career playing on both sides of the ball. There are other candidates that could get this spot on the list, but Kelson never met expectations for this Longhorns defense.

What Texas needed out of Kelson was to take his 6-foot-2 and 210 pound frame and his elite physical tools and take this defensive backfield to another level. Entering the 2004 season, the Texas secondary was in the midst of earning its marks as “DBU”, but Kelson didn’t help that journey.

Kelson did round out his career with the Longhorns with 70 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and one interception. Although, he switched to linebacker often under Mack Brown and could never really find a home at any position on the defensive side of the ball.
