Another former highly touted five-star recruit that definitely got his chances during his time with the Texas football program is the ultra-disappointing quarterback Garrett Gilbert. It is interesting that both Allen and Gilbert played for the Longhorns around the same period of time.

Was the disappointment for Gilbert’s career on the Forty Acres due to the early spotlight he got in the BCS National Championship Game against the Alabama Crimson Tide as a true freshman or just too much pressure on his shoulders all-around? We may never know.

But Gilbert is still hanging around in the football world. He was a member of the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football this year before the league folded after eight weeks of competition. Gilbert was even named the MVP on Twitter for the eight weeks that the AAF actually played games.

In his three seasons with the Longhorns, Gilbert racked up 3,301 passing yards and 13 touchdowns compared to a whopping 23 interceptions. Just one season after Texas made it to the national title game, Gilbert drowned the team with a 5-7 record in 2010. A once highly touted blue chip prospect that ranked No. 14 among all 2009 high school prospects in the nation, Gilbert was a complete letdown for Texas.
