The Cal Golden Bears and the 2019 Texas football recruiting class duked it out to land the commitment of four-star ICC outside linebacker Kuony Deng, among other programs, for this past recruiting cycle. Deng had 24 schools total on his offer sheet. The best of those offers outside of Texas came from Auburn, LSU, Nebraska, Tennessee, the Virginia Tech Hokies, and Iowa Hawkeyes.

Texas looked to have good positioning to land a commitment from Deng at the outset of the 2019 recruiting cycle. But as we drew closer to the Early Signing Period last year, Deng was more and more locked in with Cal.

Deng ranked as the No. 13 2019 JUCO prospect in the nation and the best outside linebacker. His teammate at ICC, Jermaine Johnson, also held an offer from Texas. But Johnson was classified as a defensive end during his recruitment. It wasn’t until he enrolled with Georgia that he changed over his position classification to outside linebacker.

The 6-foot-6 and 235 pound linebacker stud Deng is a native of Aidle, VA, but didn’t have much hype coming out of John Champe High School. ICC and former head coach Jason Brown put him on the map and helped him rack up those 24 offers. It would be nice if head Texas football coach Tom Herman was able to nab his commitment, but his story is still a great one to follow.
