7. Checking in on safety targets

On Aug. 1, the defensive backfield for the 2020 Texas football recruiting class could get its biggest addition yet, or it could lose out to the Auburn Tigers. The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions are giving a nice lead to the Longhorns to nab him over Auburn, Texas A&M, and Alabama.

But beyond what Thompson Jr. brings to the table for the Longhorns, there are a number of safety targets in play for the 2020 recruiting class. Four-star Lufkin safety Jerrin Thompson had a visit with Texas earlier this week and could be trending toward the Longhorns.

Four-star Shadow Creek safety Xavion Alford was on the radar for Texas for the past 12 months. While Alford isn’t set to decide soon, that we know of, he is a top 150 ranked 2020 high school prospect in the nation and could make a massive impact for this recruiting class.

For the 2021 Texas recruiting class, the top target at safety has to be four-star Kennedale product JD Coffey. Texas only sent one scholarship offer to 2021 safety prospects thus far, but that number could jump up within the next four or five months. Texas thrives through safety recruiting and the 2020 and 2021 recruiting classes have a lot of potential at the position.
