3. What the successful July means for the 2020 recruiting class on defense

On the defensive side of the ball, there wasn’t a single commitment in the 2020 Texas football recruiting class for quite a while. Texas had to wait until landing four-star cornerback Kitan Crawford (originally classified as a running back/athlete) until it had at least one commitment on the defensive side of the ball.

However, there was a big snowball effect for the Longhorns on the defensive side of the ball in the 2020 recruiting class. Texas landed two huge commitments from four-star Cy Ridge defensive tackle Vernon Broughton and four-star Highland Park outside linebacker/edge rusher Prince Dorbah in July.

Possibly the most underrated addition to the 2020 recruiting class last month was three-star Corner Canyon defensive end Van Fillinger. The 6-foot-4 and 250 pound stud has value written all over him and should be a four-star prospect by the time National Signing Day 2020 arrives.

The rest of this recruiting for the Longhorns will need to see more talented additions to the defense for the 2020 class. Texas is sure to add depth if need be with prospects like Fillinger, but difference makers like Broughton and Dorbah are the priority.
