Position Battle: Left Guard

The Competition: Connor McGovern

This position battle for a former All-American out of the Texas football program, Dallas Cowboys left guard Connor Williams, won’t be so much out proving his worth as staying healthy. In a sense, proving his worth to Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett will be the same as staying healthy.

If the Cowboys can’t rely on Williams to have a healthy second season in the NFL, then he could be passed up quickly by the former Penn State Nittany Lions offensive lineman Conner McGovern. There is still a ton of quality depth that the Cowboys have across the board on the offensive line.

Just in terms of talent alone, Williams should have the edge and be a cornerstone of the Cowboys offensive line. Williams could also be a depth piece on the offensive line behind former Notre Dame Fighting Irish guard Zack Martin and former LSU Tigers offensive tackle La’El Collins.

Williams likely won’t get to block for superstar running back Ezekiel Elliott in the preseason, but he doesn’t need to prove himself to the coaching staff. Make progress and be a reliable presence along the offensive line and the Cowboys should have a clear path set for Williams to be the starting left guard.
