Position Battle: Free Safety

The Competition: Anthony Levine, Bennett Jackson

For the entirety of the 2018 season, former Texas football All-American safety DeShon Elliott was injured. He’ll be essentially looking to take part in his rookie campaign this coming regular season. In Training Camp, Elliott flashed potential that he could be a quality rotational safety or even a starter with the Ravens two or three years down the line. He also showed flashes in last season’s preseason debut against the Chicago Bears.

Elliott racked up six interceptions in his final season with the Longhorns. He’s a ball hawking safety that has a ton of potential at the next level. He’ll also get to learn under a superstar safety that is newly signed with the Ravens in the former Seahawks standout Earl Thomas.

The two former Longhorns, between Thomas and Elliott, could be a good part of the future of this Ravens secondary. Much like Connor Williams with the Cowboys, Elliott needs to prove that he can stay healthy and productive to work his way up the depth chart.

The competition for Elliott at free safety will mainly come from the former Notre Dame cornerback/wide receiver Bennett Jackson. Elliott and Jackson are two of the more impressive and potent young Ravens defensive backs purely in terms of the physical tools and promise. Another bit of the competition could come from veteran safety Anthony Levine.
