Texas Football: 5 former Longhorns facing NFL Preseason position battles
Position Battle: Quarterback
The Competition: Dwayne Haskins, Case Keenum
Amid all the names on this list of former Texas football players, ninth-year quarterback Colt McCoy might be making the most headway in Training Camp. Preseason is going to be a pivotal time for McCoy since he’ll be getting back from a fractured right fibula he suffered last year.
Film and media reports from Training Camp thus far are giving a good amount of favor to McCoy over the former Ohio State Buckeyes product Dwayne Haskins and former Minnesota Vikings and Broncos starter Case Keenum. Haskins was a first round pick for the Washington Redskins in the 2019 NFL Draft.
It also wasn’t all that long ago that Keenum was the starter for the Vikings and the Broncos were signing him to a big money contract to be their solution under center. Last season Keenum tallied up 18 passing touchdowns and 15 interceptions with the Broncos.
The long-term answer for the Redskins and head coach Jay Gruden should be Haskins but uncertainty along the offensive line makes the surprisingly elusive McCoy a good option. This coming season could actually see McCoy line up as the Week 1 starter for the Redskins.
