Texas Football: Impact skilled 4-Star CB Ethan Pouncey brings Longhorns
A massive addition to the 2020 Texas football recruiting class dropped on Aug. 6 with 4-Star Florida native CB Ethan Pouncey.
On the same day (Aug. 6) that the 2020 Texas football recruiting class missed out a Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex native, it capped it all off by adding an even bigger target. The target of the 2020 Texas football recruiting class missed out on Aug. 6 is four-star Bishop Dunne outside linebacker Brennon Scott. Early in the day on Tuesday, Scott committed to head coach Les Miles and the Kansas Jayhawks.
But the one target that the 2020 recruiting class for the Texas Longhorns football program landed is four-star Winter Park High School and Winter Park, FL, cornerback Ethan Pouncey. Landing Pouncey is a much bigger deal for the Longhorns than missing out on Scott.
What is weird is the fact that the Longhorns lost out on a linebacker recruit to Kansas.
And what’s surprising for Pouncey committing to the Longhorns is the final set of 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions. The Crystal Ball Predictions at the beginning of the day on Aug. 6 favored the Auburn Tigers to land Pouncey over Texas but head coach Tom Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando apparently made a late run to nab his pledge.
The final two visits that Pouncey took on his recruiting timeline before he committed to Texas were with Auburn.
What Herman and the Longhorns are getting out of Pouncey is the nation’s No. 156 2020 high school prospect and the No. 10 cornerback. He’s a 6-foot-1 and 160 pound defensive back that has elite coverage skills and a natural ability to tack down the ball over opposing pass-catchers.
Pouncey passed up on offers from more than 20 other schools to land with Texas. The more notable of the programs that sent him scholarship offers included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, Clemson Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Penn State Nittany Lions.

A deciding factor for Pouncey to land with the Longhorns could be his brother, wide receiver Jordan Pouncey, getting ready for his redshirt sophomore campaign this fall. Jordan promptly posted a Tweet for his younger brother on his timeline after Ethan committed to Texas.
Pouncey is coming off an incredible junior season with Winter Park where he picked off eight passes and returned three of them for touchdowns. He also had 21 pass breakups and 43 total tackles.
This might not be a cornerback that will make an immediate impact for the Texas defensive backfield but Pouncey surely has All-Big 12 type potential. Pouncey has to put on a lot of size and improve his versatility before he gets the chance to start for Herman and Orlando.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2020 Texas football recruiting class now ranks at No. 14 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12, surpassing the Oklahoma Sooners. Pouncey is the third-highest rated defensive commitment in the 2020 class and the 13th name added.
