Iowa State is one of the most underrated opponents that Texas football has on tap for the 2019 campaign. Last season, Iowa State was a nice victory for the Longhorns to add to a resume in late November. But it is going to be an even more difficult road for Texas to down the Cyclones this season than it was last.

Traveling to Ames, IA, to play at Jack Trice Stadium is always going to be a big challenge when head coach Matt Campbell is at the helm for the Cyclones. Just look at what happened to former superstar quarterback Will Grier and his electric West Virginia offense in Ames last year.

A big piece that could emerge for the Iowa State defense this fall could be redshirt freshman linebacker/edge rusher Will McDonald. In the limited action that McDonald saw last year in three games, he racked up three total tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble.

What McDonald showed in just three games of playing time last season truly proves that he is a great under-the-radar breakthrough candidate. McDonald could see himself get more time in a starting role coming off the edge this season. He could wreak havoc in opposing team’s backfields, especially with the atmosphere of Jack Trice Stadium behind him.
