Texas Football: 5 best freshmen the Longhorns face in 2019
Depending on whether head coach Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State decides to play redshirt freshman former highly touted four-star recruit Spencer Sanders or the former Hawaii Rainbow Warriors transfer and redshirt senior Dru Brown as the starting quarterback, the offense could be very explosive. If Gundy gives the edge to Brown, there will be more steady results in the passing game early in the regular season.
But if Gundy allows the former Texas High School Football Player of the Year Sanders to get the starting reigns from the kick off of the 2019 regular season, then there will be more dynamic ability for this offense. Oklahoma State also has a ton of surrounding weapons at the skill positions for either Sanders or Brown.
Sanders seems to make more sense for the Pokes to make waves in the Big 12 early and often. But Gundy tends to play this type of decision more conservatively than other coaches in the Big 12 would. Since Texas football gets Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener in late September, Brown could still be their starting quarterback.
If Sanders is ready to go for a hot start to the coming season, then he could be a versatile option that gives the Texas defense a lot of trouble. He’s a solid dual-threat quarterback that could utilize his skill position weapons like redshirt sophomore running back Chuba Hubbard and junior wideout Tylan Wallace to the fullest extent.
