Adding a wideout with elite promise to the 2020 Texas football recruiting class nearly vaulted this group into the top five in the nation.

It would be hard to argue with the point that the 2020 Texas football recruiting class is hotter than any other program’s in the nation entering the 2019 regular season. This fall, head Texas football coach Tom Herman will already have put together one of the best months of July and August of any college football program in the nation, no matter what happens beyond Aug. 17.

With the Texas Longhorns football program adding a potentially elite talent at wide receiver like four-star Temple High School product Quentin Johnston, a weak point of the 2020 recruiting class gets filled. With Johnston as the top wide receiver target coming out of high school left on the board for the 2020 class, Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck should be thrilled with the results on the recruiting trail to cap the summer months during the offseason.

Johnston is the 17th addition to the 2020 recruiting class. He is the first wide receiver to announce his commitment to join the 2020 Longhorns class. But he is also one of the most highly touted commits overall in this group. Johnston ranks as the nation’s No. 69 2020 high school prospect and the No. 13 wide receiver.

This is a very deep recruiting class of wide receivers, but no one sticks out in particular at the top. Johnston is one of the more lengthy and potent possession receivers for this cycle. Looking down the road three or four years, this could be a gem find for the Longhorns.

Since the Longhorns missed out on the five-star Calabasas wide receiver Johnny Wilson to the Oregon Ducks, landing Johnston is crucial. His larger frame and strength could allow him to become a solid outside receiver in the Texas passing game in the next two or three years.

Texas can now prioritize Johnston as the primary wide receiver in the 2020 class with four-star Tulsa, OK, wideout Javian Hester as another potential starter to beef up the receiving corps. Both Johnston and Hester would make a solid class at wide receiver for the Longhorns when it wasn’t the most overwhelming positional need.

The main reason why wide receiver was becoming one of the bigger needs in the 2020 class was the fact that there wasn’t a single addition to the receiving corps yet. Texas does have a lot of depth at wide receiver on campus now, but losing Jordan Whittington due to a position switch and Bru McCoy back to the USC Trojans created more of a need to add one or two key guys.

This is also the first big addition to the 2020 class for the 2019 Rivals Recruiter of the Year and Texas wide receiver coach Drew Mehringer. Johnston is a skilled 6-foot-4 and 180 pound wideout hailing from Temple, TX, that originally received his scholarship offer from the Longhorns on Feb. 17.

The commitment decision for Johnston seemingly came down to the Longhorns and TCU Horned Frogs. The highlights of his 11 offers came from the Baylor Bears, Duke Blue Devils, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, and Virginia Tech Hokies.

This is a big win for the Texas coaching staff over TCU head coach Gary Patterson. Johnston was seemingly leaning toward the Horned Frogs at one point but Herman and the Longhorns swung his interests over to playing on the Forty Acres.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2020 Texas football recruiting class holds steady at No. 6 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12. But Texas is fast approaching the Georgia Bulldogs to crack the top five in the national class rankings.
