5. Signing with Texas football and getting drafted into the MLB in 2001

The Texas football program landed former Lee High School and Midland, TX, native five-star running back Cedric Benson as part of the 2001 signing class. He committed and signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Longhorns on Feb. 7, 2001. He officially enrolled with Texas on June 1.

The enrollment of Benson with Texas was just five days before he was picked up by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round of the 2001 MLB Draft. He played with the Vero Beach Dodgers and GCL Dodgers for a while before solely turning his attention to football.

I put this moment at No. 5 since Benson hadn’t officially started playing in game action for the Longhorns yet, but it is still an important mark in his collegiate and professional sports career.

4. First career rushing touchdown

Benson racked up his first career rushing touchdown with the Longhorns in his collegiate debut against the New Mexico State Aggies in Week 1 of the 2001 season. He managed 64 rushing yards and one touchdown in that game. But it was one of a number to come during his time on the Forty Acres and marked the beginning of an incredible college career.
