Legacy of Cedric Benson

Not only were his four years with the Texas football program special, but Cedric Benson will always be known as one of the best running backs in this team’s history. Even today Benson is generally regarded as the best freshman running back in Longhorns history. It is a well deserved mark too.

Where it starts to get unfair for Benson was with his status given by a handful of media and fans as a bust after being selected fourth overall by the Bears in the 2005 NFL Draft. While Benson could be labeled as a bust solely in the eyes of Bears fans, he definitely was not a bust given his full production in the NFL with the Bears, Bengals, and Packers.

The two most unfair labels and/or snubs for Benson in his college and pro football career were the 2004 Heisman Trophy voting and the Pro Bowl selections, or lack thereof. Benson never made it to a Pro Bowl in his NFL career, despite being one of the best running backs in the league with the Bengals in the late 2000’s.

Benson by no means put together an NFL career worthy of Hall-of-Fame induction, but he should be remembered as one of the best running backs in the span of time between 2005-2015 in the NFL. He rushed for more than 1,000 for three consecutive seasons with the Bengals from 2009-2011 and was a record-breaker for the Longhorns in the early 2000’s.
