6. 2003

Record: 10-3 (7-1 Big 12)

Postseason Result: Holiday Bowl loss to Washington State Cougars

May I once again emphasize that all the places on this list aren’t purely determined by the final record for Texas football each season.

In 2003, the Longhorns had expectations to compete for a national title under Mack Brown. What ended up happening was a weird season that saw quarterback reps get split between Vince Young and Chance Mock. While neither was particularly bad, the Texas offense did have a clear lack of direction heading into the future. At least until VY rose to the occasion in 2004.

However, another horrible mark for the Longhorns back in 2003 was the Holiday Bowl loss to the No. 15 ranked Washington State Cougars by the final score of 28-20. Texas couldn’t get much of anything going under Mock’s direction against that underrated Washington State defense.

Texas was also letdown with a devastating 65-13 blowout loss to the rival Oklahoma Sooners in 2003 that prevented a team that got red hot down the stretch to reach the Big 12 Championship Game and potentially a national title game. The non-conference 38-28 loss to the past rival Arkansas Razorbacks was also a difficult way to start the season.
