Texas Football: Ranking 7 worst Longhorns teams since 2000
4. 2014
Record: 6-7 (5-4 Big 12)
Postseason Result: Texas Bowl loss to Arkansas Razorbacks
In multiple seasons on this list, the Razorbacks were a thorn in the side of a certain Texas football team. For the Longhorns in 2014, a win over a strong SEC West team like Arkansas was necessary to get the confidence up in the first-year under Charlie Strong. But that’s not what this team would received in an ugly Texas Bowl display.
The signs were looming that the Longhorns were going to have a challenging first season with various speed bumps with Strong at the helm. But few could imagine that it would include a second consecutive year with two disappointing non-conference losses to teams like BYU and the UCLA Bruins.
However, things were looking up at one point for Texas when they nearly beat rival Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown and then won four of five games in the latter stages of Big 12 play. Those four wins in five games came over Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. The lone loss was a letdown with getting shutout by the Kansas State Wildcats.
The usual story for the Longhorns took part under Strong’s direction in the final two games of the 2014 campaign with two blowout losses to TCU and Arkansas. Those two losses came by a combined margin of 62 points, and the Longhorns had little to no quarterback direction with David Ash and Tyrone Swoopes both disappointing in what playing time each got.
