The position switch by Herman and Orlando for Texas football to have sophomore defensive back B.J. Foster play at nickelback could be a good one. Foster excelled as a true freshman at safety, but he was more of a rotational player. Texas will be set at safety between sophomore Caden Sterns and senior Brandon Jones this fall.

Last season, Foster played in all but two games. In the 12 games he did play in he totaled 46 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 1 interception, 5 pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. There’s a good argument that Foster already had his breakthrough season as just a true freshman.

But Foster clearly has another level that he could reach with that fantastic trio he forms with Sterns and Jones. He has the potential to become a nickelback that racks up around 70-80 tackles, double-digit tackles for loss and double-digit pass breakups, and three or four interceptions.

The concern for Foster ahead of the 2019 regular season is concussion-like symptoms that could limit him against Louisiana Tech. Brewer and Foster could be in the same boat with the coaching staff wanting to limit their play in the season opener. It is crucial that Foster is ready for the primetime showdown against LSU in Week 2.
