Sugar Bowl

Opponent: Florida Gators

Date: Jan. 1

Location: Mercedes-Benz Superdome (New Orleans, LA)

Exactly one year after Texas football downed Georgia in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Florida Gators would get their whack at knocking off a top dog from the Big 12. Last year, Texas wound up in the Sugar Bowl since Oklahoma made it into the College Football Playoff. But Oklahoma finds itself outside Playoff and the Sugar Bowl this season.

Texas got itself firmly back inside the top 10 rankings, at No. 6. Florida just missed out on the Playoff by beating Georgia in the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” but then losing to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. This feels like all those Florida teams that won 10 games under former head coach Jim McElwain but lost in their bowl game.

What’s different this time around is the fact that Florida comes in ranked at No. 5, just missing out on the Playoff like Oklahoma. But Texas tries to take advantage of a down SEC East opponent in the Sugar Bowl for the second straight season. It does not play out that way for Ehlinger, Herman, and the Longhorns.

Florida junior quarterback Feleipe Franks and KaDarius Toney have their way with the Texas defense. And a Texas offensive line that looked good in recent weeks broke down around Ehlinger and Ingram. Even Whittington can’t spark the offense all that much. The Gators run away with this game in the third quarter, but Texas still has a lot to be excited about returning so much talent in 2020.

Final Score: Florida 30, Texas 20

Record: 11-3 (8-2 Big 12)
