Texas Football: Game-by-game predictions for the Longhorns in 2019
Week 6
Opponent: Oklahoma Sooners
Date: Oct. 12
Location: Cotton Bowl (Dallas, TX)
The usual spot for the Red River Showdown during the regular season will see a top 5 matchup between Texas football and the Oklahoma Sooners for the first time in a long time. The last time that the Longhorns and Sooners met in a Red River Showdown where both teams were ranked in the top five was in 2008.
However, the Longhorns need to jump on the former Alabama transfer quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Sooners quickly. Ehlinger and Johnson also play a critical role in getting the Longhorns ahead early in the first half. Those two spearhead two drives early in the game, and Johnson hauls in his fourth receiving touchdowns of the campaign thus far to give Texas a good hold on the lead early.
But Herman can’t hold off his rival Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley for very long. Star Oklahoma senior wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has his way with sophomore cornerback Anthony Cook and senior safety Brandon Jones isn’t able to help much. Lamb and sophomore running back Kennedy Brooks manage four touchdowns combined to get the Sooners ahead.
A tendency from Herman to rise to the occasion in big games is shot down against Oklahoma in Week 6. Texas gits its first blemish on the record in 2019 with a huge outing from the Oklahoma offense. Ehlinger is also a bit turnover prone against the new-look defense from defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. This one hurts for the Longhorns, knocking them out of the top 5.
