Defensive tackle is starting to get separation on the depth chart thanks to the rise of redshirt freshman defensive tackle and former four-star highly touted 2018 recruit Keondre Coburn during the offseason. Coburn was in a position battle with senior sizable 6-foot-3 and 325 pound lineman Gerald Wilbon for much of the offseason.

But Wilbon experienced some injury issues that limited him during the final week of fall camp. That allowed Coburn to solidify his starting spot to anchor the defensive line and possibly lock it down in Week 1 for the rest of the regular season.

It will be crucial for defensive coordinator Todd Orlando to have Wilbon back in the rotation for the defensive line by the start of Big 12 play on Sep. 21 against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. His size and experience are very important for this position group. He even recovered a fumble in last season’s Sugar Bowl win over the Georgia Bulldogs. That turnover was a momentum changer.
