4. Running back depth might be an even bigger problem after Week 1

An unfortunate injury where true freshman running back Jordan Whittington came up lame on what was really his first touch of the game kept him out the rest of the way. Sophomore running back Keaontay Ingram split the workload for the rushing attack alongside true freshman converted quarterback Roschon Johnson and Ehlinger.

If Whittington is set to miss Week 2 action, this running back room could really be in trouble. Texas can’t afford to have yet another running back missing with injury. Whittington was supposed to be the back that helped take a lot of the pressure in the ground game off Ingram and Ehlinger.

Ingram finishes his season debut with 78 rushing yards on 11 touches and one touchdown. Ehlinger had 34 yards on eight tries and Johnson snagged 26 rushing yards on seven carries. Herman reportedly stated that Whittington is likely going to be listed as “day-to-day” but that he was cleared to return if needed against Louisiana Tech.

Redshirt senior Kirk Johnson and junior Daniel Young could still be out heading into the LSU game. It might be the Big 12 opener against the Oklahoma State Cowboys where the Longhorns have Kirk and Danny Young back in the mix. That is still two weeks away. For now, let’s hope for a continued emergence from Roschon and full health for Whittington.
