1. Relevant action elsewhere

A number of high-profile head coaches made their debuts, or at least their return, to college football over the weekend. That was one of the bigger storylines heading into Week 1 was all the new hires in action. Neal Brown cut it close with the West Virginia Mountaineers, as did Matt Campbell with the Iowa State Cyclones.

The most significant of those returning coaches pertaining to the Texas football program is former head coach Mack Brown. In a 24-20 win for the North Carolina Tar Heels over the South Carolina Gamecocks, Brown surely made an emphatic statement in his return to where he coached before joining the Longhorns.

What was so special for Mack in that win was the fact that he did it with a true freshman quarterback that he recruited and signed last offseason, with Sam Howell. But he wasn’t the only pertinent head coach returning to college football yesterday. Les Miles coached a close win for the Kansas Jayhawks over the FCS Indiana State Sycamores.

Other results worth noting in relevance to the Longhorns was a two possession win for Oklahoma State over the Oregon State Beavers on the road on Friday night. The rival Oklahoma Sooners are also set to battle the Houston Cougars in primetime on Sep. 1. We’ll see how the offenses for the Oklahoma schools are looking after the opening weekend.
