Charlie Strong (HC), South Florida Bulls

The most recent head Texas football coach before Tom Herman took part in an interesting non-conference showdown last weekend. Charlie Strong led his South Florida Bulls team that had high expectations coming into the 2019 campaign into a potential upset against the Wisconsin Badgers at home.

The beating that Strong’s team took at the hands of superstar running back Jonathan Taylor and the Badgers was embarrassing. USF fell short to Taylor and Wisconsin by the final score of 49-0.

Manny Diaz (HC), Miami Hurricanes

The most notable former Texas assistant taking part in Week 0 was a disciple of Mack Brown. Miami took on the Florida Gators and former Mississippi State Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen in Week 0 in Jacksonville, FL. That saw Miami come away with a heartbreaking 24-20 last minute defeat for head coach Manny Diaz at the hand of the Gators.

What’s intriguing about Diaz in relation to the Longhorns is the fact that Miami is the only team ranked ahead of them in the 2021 national class rankings. He’s keeping pace with Herman and the Longhorns in an area where most should figure he wouldn’t.
