Texas Football: 5 reasons the Longhorns will upset LSU
4. Versatility of the defense
If Texas football proved anything on the defensive side of the ball in Week 1 against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, it was the fact that multiple looks will continue to throw off the opposition. Defensive coordinator Todd Orlando proved his brilliance once more with the looks of seven or eight defensive backs that were still able to bring pressure on Louisiana Tech.
Originally it was the lightning (3-2-6) package that was able to catch opposing offenses off guard. That is still a package that Orlando and this Longhorns defense uses frequently. And with the newly expanded LSU offensive scheme putting more emphasis on stretching the field and thriving in the passing game, the lightning package will be important once more.
Players that rose to the occasion for the Texas defense last week in the 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech included sophomore linebacker Joe Ossai, redshirt freshman defensive back DeMarvion Overshown, and junior safety Chris Brown. This is the first time in a while that the Longhorns truly have six or eight safeties that are all capable of making an impact in the same season.
If one factor is guaranteed for Orlando against this new look LSU offense this weekend, it will be the fact that he’s going to throw a few looks their way that they haven’t seen before. Orlando does a great job of changing up his looks and making in-game adjustments for teams like LSU.
