Texas Football: 5 thoughts after Longhorns drubbing of Rice
1. Oklahoma State doesn’t give Texas much of a down period
The Big 12 opener for Texas football this season seems just as difficult as it looked heading into the conference opener in 2018. Oklahoma State comes in with an electric offense and an undefeated record. Granted the three wins for Oklahoma State didn’t come against the most difficult competition.
Nonetheless, the down time for Herman and the Longhorns didn’t last very long after the loss to LSU before a night game against Oklahoma State arrives. Texas did have one week to build more momentum after the one possession loss to LSU, but Oklahoma State is a much different test than Rice.
What doesn’t help this home conference opener in Week 4 is the success head coach Mike Gundy and the Pokes had in Austin within the past decade. Oklahoma State beat Texas in seven of the last nine meetings in this series and in each of the last five at DKR in Austin.
Oklahoma State is coming off a closer than it looks 40-21 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on the road. The other two wins for the Pokes came over the Oregon State Beavers on the road and FCS McNeese State and former Longhorns offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert.
